That's when many companies started taking emoji seriously. It was around this time that Google employees asked Unicode to look into the possibility to create a uniform set of icons. However, till this time the emojis and smileys were dissipated and there was a need to unify them into a universal set being used as a standard all across technologies. The smileys were first developed as a set of icons by the smiley company in the year 2001, aimed to allow users to add icons and emojis in their emails and writing on desktop computers. all implemented the icons sets in their phones in the late 1990s. Japanese mobile operators like Vodafone, SoftBank Mobile, etc. Japan was one of the first countries to widely adopt early emoji set in their phones. These were referred to as Smileys at the time. Later, many Nokia phones too brought in many emojis and icons featured their phones. In 1995, the telecom giant Alcatel launched their first mobile phone with a smiley on its welcome screen as part of a PR run. In the early 1990s, the emoticons and emojis were first seen in pictograms and welcome messages. The emoji or emote for short are believed to have taken inspiration from pictograms or Icons. These basic text-based expressions are now established in Unicode emoji language. Emote is the pictorial representation of facial expressions using characters. The emoji was an improvement from the emote or emoticon.
